Getting outdoors in the garden over the summer months is a great way to make the most of the warm weather and spend time together as a family. But whether you’ve got young children or teenagers, you’re no doubt familiar with the way their toys and games can quickly dominate any space – whether indoors or outdoors. It’s important to ensure that your garden can be enjoyed by children and adults alike, so you can all feel happy and want to spend as much time in it as possible. There are some simple ways to create a garden your whole family will enjoy.

Whether you’ve got acres of garden or a small yard space, the best way to ensure it’s a pleasant space for the whole family is to create areas designated for children and for adults. You don’t need to physically create barriers between them, but perhaps outlining the areas with stepping stones, gravel or borders will encourage the kids to stick to their own area and prevent stray toys from creeping into the rest of the garden. Make them responsible for keeping their own area tidy, and give them a sense of pride in maintaining it.

Kids Area

Once you’ve selected the children’s area, you might want to give them an incentive to stick to it. A Play area with a swing, a climbing frame or a Wendy house will give them endless hours of fun. If your kids are a little older, a trampoline or sports equipment like a basketball hoop or a football net will keep them entertained all summer. Create storage space for all of their toys, games and footballs so they don’t get lots or damaged when they aren’t in use. Depending on what toys your kids have, you might choose to place them on grass, or else opt for bark chippings for added safety.

Adult area

If your dream garden has somewhere to entertain guests, ensure that your designated adults’ area has room for some quality garden furniture. Al fresco dining in summer is a great way to spend time with friends and extended family. Perhaps you want somewhere to unwind in peace with a book or a glass of wine. Reclining sun loungers, deck chairs or even a hammock can add a touch of serenity to your space. Add to the ambiance with sweet smelling flowers or herbs, which you can plant in borders or arrange in pots.

Space For Everyone

While it’s nice to have space to relax and a place for the kids to call their own, part of the pleasure of having a garden is spending time together. One way to ensure the whole family can bond in the garden is by growing your own fruits and vegetables. Kids love to grow food, and you can help them along the way. They will learn early on the joys of gardening, and get to eat the fruits of your labour too!
