What is Abaca / Rattan?
Abaca (Latin: Musa textilis) is a plant that belongs to the banana family and is native to the Philippines as well as being widely grown in Borneo and Sumatra. On average it grows to a height of six metres, and the very useful, pliable and durable fibre, also known as 'Manila hemp' comes from harvesting the leaf sheath on the outside of the trunk. The original brown Manila envelope was made from these tough fibres.
Wicker is a common name given to any tough fibre that comes from any number of plants such as rattan, reed or bamboo. Rattan itself is a variety of fast-growing palm (Latin: Arecacea) mostly found in Indonesia. Some varieties grow hundreds of metres long.
It must be noted that growing and harvesting rattan provides a viable economic alternative to timber-logging and other destructive activities. The economic importance of these fibres and fast growing nature of these natural fibres means that it they can be very easy to sustain. They are also much easier to harvest, requiring simpler tools and are much easier to transport than timber.
